Yep, that's usually the case, whatever the government takes over, turns to crap. They should stay out of it and only play a limited oversight role. But then what will their battalions of paper-pushing bureaucrats do. They could always get real jobs, but i found that doesn't go down too well with either the governments or it's bureaucrats.
